It is a home away from home for families with children who need to stay in or visit hospitals far from home.
It is an accommodation facility for families staying with their children for medical treatment.
What if my child becomes sick...
When children become sick, first and foremost, families think about getting them the best possible treatment. However, what if that hospital is located far from home...
The burden on families can be huge; emotionally, physically and financially.
At such times, parents put themselves second, sleeping on hospital couches or cots for days at a time, eating simple boxed meals three times a day so that they can be there for their children while they are being treated. On top of that, they have to worry about the family they have left behind at home faraway.
The Ronald McDonald House was born to support such families. The concept is A Home-Away-From-Home, a second place where people can feel at home. The Houses should be a place that families accompanying sick children can spend their time as comfortably as if they were at home. The Houses have kitchens where meals can be cooked, dining rooms, laundry rooms and playrooms along with bedrooms that are designed to protect privacy. Taking into consideration the burden on families, the Houses can be used for 1,000 yen per person per day.
Keeping Families Close; we want families to be able to stay together no matter when.
Ronald McDonald Houses around the World
It was started in Philadelphia in 1974.
The beloved three year old daughter of Fredrick Gordon Hill, a former American football player in Philadelphia, was diagnosed with leukemia and had to stay in the hospital. During his daughter's stay, Hill saw mothers and their children sleeping on top of each other in cramped hospital rooms and families being forced to eat meals from hospital vending machines. He too was suffering, both emotionally and financially, because the hospital where his daughter was staying at was far from home. Deciding to see if he could create a place for families to stay near the hospital where they could get even just a little peace of mind, he carried out fundraising activities with the help of Owner Operators of McDonald's restaurants near the hospital, hospital doctors and fellow football team members.
This earnest wish was shared among many people and, in 1974, the world's first Ronald McDonald House was born by remodeling a house provided by a Philadelphia newspaper publisher. As of June 2023, approximately 380 houses have been opened worldwide.
